1. MANDATE
The Petroleum Exploration Sector policy objectives are carried out by the Petroleum Exploration and Production Department of the Ministry, which undertakes the following functions:
To promote petroleum exploration in the country by attracting oil companies to invest in the sector.
2. OBJECTIVES
- To monitor and regulate petroleum exploration and development operations undertaken by oil companies.
- To build local capacity in manpower and infrastructure for petroleum exploration, development and production.
- To carry out geological and geophysical surveys in various sedimentary basins of the country in order to assess their hydrocarbon potential.
3. ORGANISATION
The Petroleum Exploration and Production Department (PEPD) is headed by a Commissioner, under whom are two Assistant Commissioners, each heading a Division namely:
4. FUNCTION
The roles and major functions of PEPD are to:
i. Promote investment in petroleum exploration and production by packaging and
disseminating preliminary exploration data;
ii. Monitor and regulate petroleum exploration operations undertaken by oil companies
in the upstream sub-sector;
iii. Participate in the geophysical, geological and geochemical data acquisition,
processing and interpretation in order to assess the petroleum potential of the
Country;
iv. Initiate policy and legislation on petroleum exploration and development; and
v. Build national Institutional capacity in the field of petroleum exploration and
development. |
